Executive Director

Higher Ground USA is a highly regarded non-profit organization providing adaptive therapeutic recreation programs nationally for military veterans, first responders and family members with physical and emotional disabilities. As we approach our 25th year, the Executive Director will serve as the face of the organization and provide the strategic and operational leadership for continued growth.

Adaptive Sports Coordinator

Work competently and cooperatively on an interdisciplinary team of professionals to fulfill program/client goals, objectives and desired outcomes through the delivery of Recreational Therapy services. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate assigned Adaptive Sports programming in the following disciplines; adaptive snowsports, Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, cycling, hiking, fly fishing, bocce ball, paddling and swimming. Summer Adaptive Sports Instructor

The Summer Adaptive Sports Instructor provides support for all adaptive summer programming. Summer activities include cycling, hiking, camping, golf, bocce ball, fitness, social activities and more!  We provide programming for participants with cognitive, developmental and/or physical disabilities. This position is designed to provide opportunities for individuals interested in Outdoor/Experiential Education, Therapeutic Recreation, and Recreation Management to gain professional experience and knowledge in this growing field.

Operations Manager

The Operations Manager works primarily with the Higher Ground staff and program teams, ensuring all logistical support, equipment readiness and maintenance, and special needs for participants and programs are taken care of. Primary responsibility is to provide operations and logistics support for all Higher Ground programs. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to contract negotiation, property accountability, supply operations, program-specific travel, site visits, and training.

What We Offer

Higher Ground offers seasonal internship opportunities across all our programming areas. If interested in therapeutic recreation, group and individual therapeutic methods, working with individuals with disabilities, or the nonprofit sphere, this organization will provide a unique environment to develop your skills.

Recreational Skills

The ideal intern candidate will have experience in some of the following: skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, snowshoeing, Nordic skiing, rafting, cycling, fishing, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, swimming, and rock climbing.

Ideal Candidates

We are seeking individuals who are highly motivated, organized, and have exceptional verbal and written communication skills. There are plenty of opportunities to help others within Higher Ground. For those who are pursuing their therapeutic recreation degree, we follow the ATRA standards of practice and NCTRC internship guidelines.

Application Deadllines

Winter/Spring – August 15
Summer – January 15
Fall (occasionally offered) – March 30

Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, but must be received by the deadline for the timeframe of interest. Exceptions to the typical internship timeframe will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Please be clear about your preferred timeframe in your letter of interest.
